My Song Memories

Number 25 and its accompanying memory

I would have to say number 25 is one of my weirdest memories. It has to do with where I was and what I was doing when I used to hear it. The song is Do You Wanna Dance and you would never guess where I was when I heard it. In the Navy, we all lived in a barracks or a ship. At this time, I was stationed at Naval Air Station, North Island in San Diego. Our squardron had to send someone to the barracks for three months temporary additional duty as a compartment cleaner. Someone had to keep the compartment clean so every outfit had to supply a cleaner. I got lucky. The third class petty officer in charge of our dorm assigned me to clean up the tv lounge and that was it. Granted, it was not a tiny room but much smaller than the dorms. The tv lounge was rectangular in shape and sat approximately 25 to 30 people. Worst part of cleaning up this area was the cigarettes butts on the floor. But I could move out all the furniture, sweep, swab, and wax the floor, buff it, replace the furniture and be done by noon. The petty officer could have had me then go clean the dorms with the other cleaning crew but he told me when I finished the tv lounge, I was done for the day. So although I was sent there as a punishment for being disrespectful to a first class petty officer, it turned out to be great duty. I had a radio in there I could listen to and it seemed Do You Wanna Dance played often, plus I would go into some stupid kind of dance myself when it played as I was buffing the room. The po caught me dancing one time and didn't stop laughing for a week. He was a country kid who wrote songs, played his "gee-tar" and sang them. He was actually quite good. The song always reminds me of that room.
