My Song Memories

Number 26 and its accompanying memory

Buddy Holly had lots of big hits. Peggy Sue, in my opinion, was his best. It brings back one of the happiest and proudest memories of all when I hear it. I had become the first person in Service Schools Command at NTC who was given permission to play on the Varsity Basketball team. Prior to this, students were not allowed to play cause it meant they had to be excused from their last class so they could make practice. Lots of people, including the coach, went to bat for me to get that authorization. Peggy Sue was the top song at the time and in the locker room, someone always had a radio going. Peggy Sue seemed to be the most often heard song, which in turn brings back so many great memories of playing basketball for NTC. School was tough but basketball got me through it. I played on a team whose captain was Gil Partida, a second class petty officer. Many years later, his son, became the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in San Diego. On a whim, I called to see if Gil was his dad. I was told yes but that he had passed away about four years ago. I told his son that his dad was one hell of a great guy and basketball player. So Peggy Sue, if you only knew, what great memories come when I hear you.....
