My Song Memories

Number 28 and its accompanying memory

Talk about a song the evoked weird memories. Number 28, Red Rubber Ball, is just one of those songs. I had just recently come back into the Navy to avoid legal problems in Cleveland. I had orders to the USS Bradley out of San Francisco but she was still being built so they sent me to teletype repair school in San Diego. I was drinking a lot in those days and the school was very mechanically oriented. I wasn't. So I made many sojouns each evening over to the Enlist Club. Lots of music. Lots of women. Lots of beer. One volatile combination. On one particular Friday evening, I had gotten so drunk, I scarecely remembered what happend the night before. I knew I had met a lady and had done lots of dancing, but could not remember anything after that. Saturday morning, I am off to the club again to see if I can find anyone I may have been with the night before. It was so funny cause as I got to the club, I kind of "snuck" in, walking very slowly and mysteriously, hoping someone didn't jump out and pounce on me for something I may have said or done last night. There were only a couple people there so I sat at the bar and listened to the music. Red Rubber Ball must have been someone's favorite cause it kept playing. Eventually, a few ladies came in to the bar and came right over to me and asked how I felt. "Damn Bob, you sure did get drunk last night. Do you remember what you said to me?" I had to say no and they all roared with laughter. Couldn't have been too bad cause they all sat down and we commenced to drinking again. Just like the Red Rubber Ball, I bounced right back into the saddle again. Oh those were hurtin' days.
