Number 29 and its accompanying memory
Oh boy does this bring back great memories. I am heading to the Western Pacific (WestPac) on the USS George Clymer. This is going to be my first time overseas. For many of us it was our first time. All the "old salts" were telling us how much fun it was but when you asked them to explain, they would just say, "You'll see when you get there."
Well I found out what it meant the very first night there. A bunch of us headed up to Yokohama. The ship had pulled in to Yokosuka, about an hours drive south. We were told liberty was much more fun and cheaper in Yokohama so that is why we made the trip. I don't remember the girl's name, where I met her, what hotel we went to, nothing, but I do remember it was my first time "overnight" with a Japanese girl. The prevailing song I heard that night was I Can't Stop Loving You. Well, I didn't fall in love or anything like that but we sure did have a good time. That was the only time I ever saw this girl but I never forgot how much fun we had. So this was what made WestPac's so much fun. I could handle that. From that night on, I couldn't stop loving Japan. And trust me, it only got better.
