Number 32 and its accompanying memory
Number 32 goes way back. White Sport Coat by Marty Robbins. This was such a catchy tune. When Jack Fortune and I joined the Navy in 57, this song was at the top of the charts or close to it. I simply could not get it out of my head. We enlisted in downtown Cleveland but for some reason, all the Cleveland enlistees had to go to Detroit to get sworn in. All the way on the train I kept whistling this song. As I reflect on it now, I am sure it was a method of getting rid of, or not showing, my nervousness about joining the service. This was quite an intimidating decision on our part. We got to Detroit, got sworn in with a whole bunch of other enlistees, and then back to the train again and off to Great Lakes, Illinois. You guessed it. I continued to whistle that song all the way there also. I hear the song now and memories of those train rides plus that unforgetable first night at the Training Center pop right to the forefront of my thoughts. I find them so interesting as I reflect on them cause this was not an easy thing for us to do, yet it changed the course of my life. Jack only did his four years and got out. I ended up doing 22 years and loved it. Same memories come forth now when I see a Pink Carnation but they fade when I can't see anyone wearing a White Sport Coat with it. Go Navy.
