My Song Memories

Number 37 and its accompanying memory

Song number 37 was probably number one all over the world longer than any other song. "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. Man, I can't tell you how many times I was drunk and got up and made a fool out of myself dancing to that song. Well maybe not a fool. I was a pretty fair dancer. This song has several memories it evokes. While we were in the Gulf of Tonkin, providing gunfire support for the Marines, we got a short break to go out and refuel from a carrier that was close to us. We got a big surprise. They highlined over a USO troupe who performed for us on the fantail. (That's the back of the ship for you land lubbers.) Some unknown band and singer but they were great. Satisfaction seemed to be their theme song. Or maybe we just made it their theme song cause everyone kept asking them to play it again. Then there was that time in Hong Kong, drunk again, where I gave the band 5 American dollars just to play Satisfaction and then gave them another 5 to hear them play Get Off Of My Cloud. A couple of beers in me and I could just feel every vibe of every song. Fun. Fun. Fun. Hong Kong had very good bands in all the bars that tried to emulate our American and English groups. They weren't that bad either. Mostly I loved Hong Kong cause I fell in love with every Suzie Wong I met...lol. Hong Kong was weird. Old Chinese section and New British section. One half was modern with skyscrapers and the other half, or more, was Chinese ghetto with little kids sleeping right on the sidewalk at night. So sad. But I always made the best of it when I was there. Many things to do and buy. And as in Hong Kong and in every other port we ever entered, I knew where every basketball court was. Hong Kong had a huge, huge outdoor rec area. Had some great games there and made some nice friends. A lot of Satisfaction in Honk Kong.
