My Song Memories

Number 5 and its accompanying memory

Sad to say, few songs remind me of either of my ex-wives. However, this one belongs to me and Suzie, my first wife. I was 30 years old when I married for the first time and Suzie was just coming off a bitter marriage back in Ohio some place. She came out to San Diego to meet a lady friend who offeed her a job as bartender in her bar. It just so happened I practically lived at this bar, Madam Butterfly's. Suzie was a beautiful Korean girl and every guy in the place had the hots for her. At the time, I was writing to a girl in Kaohsiung with plans of possible marriage. We became good friends cause I was one of the few who was not trying to hit on her. We went to breakfast one night after the bar closed with a bunch of other friends. After eating, I drove her home. She had rented one of the two apartments above the bar. Margie, her friend and owner, lived in the other one. We sat out front for a little bit and talked about our lives. I remember telling her I was going to marry some girl from Kaohsiung so she should not get any hopes up with me. She said, "Shit. I would never marry you." We both laughed but less than four months later, SHE asked ME to marry her and I did. She quit the bar and we got our own little apartment on University Avenue. It was one of those quiet evenings when we were just spending loving time together that this song came on the radio. As she pampered herself, I lay there watching and thinking, "But You Know I Love You" and that image of her becomes omnipresent when I hear this song. She was a wonderful woman and I didn't know how to treat her so we divorced three years later. We always remained good friends, even after she re-married.
